In Iran, the topic of science production was
first introduced in the University of Tehran in 1986. However, the subject was
not fully evaluated at that time and only an idea was formed in this regard. During
1993-1994, the University of Tehran announced that authors whose articles were
published in valid international journals (e.g., ISI) would receive significant
awards. This act of the mentioned university was the first serious measure
taken to produce science in Iran (Mousavi Movahedi). From 2000 onwards, the
topic of science production has been more followed up after the continuous
emphasis of the Supreme Leader on the research area of the ministry of science,
research and technology in a new form.
Today, we witness the growing publication of
resources in various scientific areas from one hand and the measurement of the level
of scientific production growth in line with the scientific development of the
country by applying novel scientometrics tools from the other hand.
In Iran, scientists mostly suffice to the
statistics of citation databases abroad for scientometrics of scientific
centers. In addition, the centers constantly assess and rank universities based
on their English articles.
One of the resources of scientometrics and
scientific ranking of academic centers in the country is the statistics
provided by Civilica, which analyzes and presents science production statistics
of academic centers, and these statistics were gradually turned into the basis
for ranking of academic centers regarding science production.
